‘Do what we think is right’: Eversheds continues search for US deal as Foley & Lardner ends merger discussions

Eversheds will continue to search for a US deal after the firm’s top target, Milwaukee-based Foley & Lardner, ended merger discussions last month via a leaked internal memo.

In the memo, Foley chair and chief executive Jay Rothman said that while there had been preliminary conversations around exploring a more formal affiliation between the two firms, ‘no decision was ever made by Foley to pursue such an affiliation’.

Revolving doors: National, boutique and US firms all make key hires

Recently floated Birmingham-based firm Gateley has turned to recently merged Midlands rival Shakespeare Martineau for its latest lateral hire, taking partner Catriona Attride to head its national private client team. Attride had led Shakespeare Martineau’s national private client team for four years.

News in brief – November 2015

SLAUGHTER AND MAY WIPES £600M OFF BA SUIT

Litigators at Slaughter and May have successfully struck out around £600m from a claim against client British Airways. The airline is one of several airlines facing a cartel damages action from flower importer Emerald Supplies and 564 other shippers. In October the Court of Appeal disagreed with Justice Peter Smith’s decision to adjourn a strike-out application against the economic tort claims and reduced the £1bn claim to £400m.
