GC Powerlist UK and LB Awards – a September for chasing the clouds away
Apologies to Earth, Wind & Fire for the header to this post but we’re back – dusted off and primed to go. We’ll be kicking off our online coverage after the Bank Holiday with a month given over to coverage of the 2020 Legal Business Awards and the GC Powerlist UK 2020 – The Change Agenda.
The 2020 Legal Business Awards were due to take place at the end of March; everything was in place before Covid-19 wreaked havoc. But although the Coronavirus means we can’t gather to celebrate the achievements of the best lawyers in the business this year, we’re committed to giving our winners, highly commended and shortlisted teams the recognition they deserve. Cleary and 2012 GC take top prizes in 2013 Legal Business Awards
Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Linklaters and London 2012’s Terry Miller were among the key prize-winners at last night’s Legal Business Awards.
Cleary Gottlieb was named Law Firm of the Year from a shortlist including Baker & McKenzie, Bristows, Clifford Chance, Clyde & Co, RPC and Travers Smith. The Wall Street leader was singled out for a truly outstanding year, combining cutting-edge mandates such as Greece’s sovereign bond restructuring and advising Rosneft on its $55bn acquisition of TNK-BP, while posting the highest five-year growth rate of any elite global law firm.

Weightmans – Feet on the ground
After four years of consecutive revenue growth and two transformative mergers in 2011, Weightmans is our National/Regional Firm of the Year. However, there’s no chance of any of it going to the managing partner’s head.
Weightmans’ Patrick Gaul (pictured) is as laid back and straightforward as managing partners come. In an unmistakable scouse accent reminiscent of Ringo Starr, his answers are economical and precise. He doesn’t take himself too seriously and, in a trait quite rare among managing partners, is very low on hyperbole.

When David Harris collected his Management Partner of the Year award from Legal Business at Grosvenor House in mid-February, it wasn’t just the David Bowie soundtrack that brought a smile to his face. Though Bowie is a hero of this polo-playing guitarist, that smile was prompted by the day job, and the apparent vindication of his ambitious plan to transform Lovells from a mid-tier everyfirm into a global player.
