The International Arbitration Centre (IAC), the purpose-built premier hearing venue situated near to the Royal Courts of Justice on Fleet Street, has opened a new Covid-compliant ‘super suite’ to cater for a projected increase in disputes heard at the centre as hearings roll over from 2020 into 2021 and beyond.
With the launch of a new super suite, the 25,000-sq ft IAC has added its most technically advanced facility yet, accommodating up to 100 people in total – if socially distanced – with up to 50 socially distanced attendees in its main hearing room. Int-Arb Arbitrators & Mediators (Int-Arb), the specialist set of advocates launched earlier this year, is opening a new branch in Washington DC with the recruitment of its latest member.
The veteran mediator and arbitrator Wolf von Kumberg becomes the sixth tenant at Int-Arb, the set and membership service for independent practitioners launched in January. Von Kumberg, who joins from ArbDB Chambers, will split his time between Int-Arb’s central London offices and the new branch in Washington. For large companies and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, disputes are an inevitable feature of doing business. According to the Litigation Trends Annual Survey, published by Norton Rose Fulbright, US companies now spend $1.2m on disputes per $1bn of annual revenue. Add in the growth of non-US companies involved in disputes and tens of billions of dollars are being spent worldwide in resolving them. Where those disputes are resolved, and in what form, is evolving in line with the global economy – as economic power shifts eastwards, so does the volume of disputes.
Despite this trend, which is underpinned by intense competition from rival dispute resolution centres in Asia, London continues to be the world’s most favoured international disputes destination – at least for now. As rival jurisdictions seize the opportunity to increase their share, the battle for business shows no sign of abating.
