Revolving Doors: Global 100 firms focus on international hires

Approaching the holiday season, Asia, Europe and the US emerged as hubs for partner moves with Herbert Smith Freehills losing a prominent partner in Japan to Morrison & Foerster – which also acquired a German partner from in-house. In New York, Dentons made a rare lateral from Baker & McKenzie while Norton Rose Fulbright also hired from in-house.

Investing in the City: Gibson Dunn scores with Kirkland’s Gillespie

The last year has seen Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher make a substantial push hiring heavyweight players in London with debt finance veteran Stephen Gillespie becoming the latest addition to the team, quitting Kirkland & Ellis after eight and a half years to join the firm.

Revolving Doors: NRF makes a key finance hire in the City, Eversheds bets on Scottish real estate and Dentons hires a team in Paris

Last week saw Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) and Duane Morris grow their capital markets and employment teams in the City respectively, while Eversheds looked north of the border with an addition in its Edinburgh office. Meanwhile, Dentons hired a 5-lawyer team from Dechert in Paris.

Recruitment at record levels

Frank Varela of V&P Global details the changing face of legal recruitment over the last 25 years.

Legal Business is 25 years old and the legal recruitment market has played a significant part in its development and in its revenues. It has provided many of the headlines and inspired some of the stories that have captivated the market over that period.

It seems opportune then to look at how the legal recruitment market itself has fared over that period. There has been a demonstrable surge in recruitment over the last 25 years – certainly more lawyers, more law firms in the market and so more demand for talent than ever before. After a post-2008 lull, the competition for the best talent is so hot that guarantees are ‘back in vogue’.

The market is now full of headhunters, but that certainly wasn’t always the case. When Legal Business first went to the printing press, I was founding Longbridge International, at the time the first executive search boutique dedicated to the legal profession.
