US firms have been busy expanding their European finance ranks this week, with Latham & Watkins scooping yet another Magic Circle partner and Ropes & Gray hiring a leveraged finance partner in London.

Newly-crowned Law Firm of the Year at the Legal Business Awards 2018, Fieldfisher has continued its campaign of geographical expansion with a new office in Luxembourg.

The outpost of the London-headquartered firm opened this week. Initially focused on finance and funds work, the office is being managed by country managing partner Ingrid Dubourdieu, who has joined from local firm D.Law where she was a partner. In a quieter week for City recruitment, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft  made a key hire in London while a number of firms expanded their teams internationally.

Cadwalader reinvigorated its finance practice with the hire of partner Samantha Hutchinson from Dentons, after an exodus saw four partners leave its City restructuring practice at the start of this year.  Hutchinson specialises in advising lenders on a range of financing products across all fund sectors. Slaughter and May return to Hong Kong for third-ever lateral hire

The lateral-phobic Slaughter and May has returned to the market barely a year after its first London foray with its third-ever partner hire, adding investigations and litigation lawyer Wynne Mok to its Hong Kong office.

Mok joins from the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), where she has been a director of enforcement since 2016. Her experience there includes complex litigation, enforcing good governance and shaping regulatory policy. She was previously a disputes resolution partner at Norton Rose Fulbright from 2012. DLA loses three real estate partners to McDermott in wake of 50-lawyer exodus

McDermott Will & Emery is darkening DLA Piper’s door once more, with the hiring of another three partners, shortly after bringing in 20 partners from the firm’s US offices.

London-based DLA real estate partners Laurence Rogers, Neville Wright and Tom Calnan are leaving the firm to join McDermott. Rogers specialises in real estate finance, Wright in corporate tax for the finance and real estate sectors, and Calnan in commercial real estate. Four Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) partners have decamped to Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) – including aviation specialist Rex Rosales – while lateral hires in the City and abroad continue.

The four-partner hire for HSF sees two moves to London and Singapore respectively. WFW’s aviation sector head Rosales will be joined by asset finance group specialist Jahnavi Ramachandran in London, while finance expert Siva Subramaniam and aviation partner Samuel Kolehmainen leave WFW to join HSF’s Singapore office. Revolving doors: Magic Circle provides talent as UK players strengthen at home and abroad

Last week saw the notable hires of highly experienced partners by rival firms in the UK, with the magic circle providing the source for some of the most high-profile acquisitions.

The most notable recruit came in Asia, where veteran silk Judith Gill QC is set to leave Allen & Overy to take up a position in 20 Essex Street’s Singapore offering within Maxwell Chambers on 1 May. Gill, who was admitted onto the roll in 1985, and said: ‘A&O has given me a level of encouragement, support and opportunity beyond all my expectations. ‘Top of our list’: A&O hires white-collar specialist Giles from Kingsley Napley

As the demand for criminal defence lawyers intensifies amid increased scrutiny from regulators, Allen & Overy has bolstered its firepower with the hire of white-collar crime partner Eve Giles from Kingsley Napley.

Giles has been a partner at Kingsley Napley since 2009 and will become A&O’s sixth corporate crime partner later this year, joining head of corporate and commercial litigation Lawson Caisley and partners Jonathan Hitchin, Calum Burnett, Arnondo Chakrabarti and Alice Englehart.
