Revolving Doors: Bakers and Hill Dickinson the main movers in the City as firms look to Europe for expansion

Baker McKenzie and Hill Dickinson were the primary movers in the City recruitment market over the last week as a number of firms looked to bolster their European benches, with Paris and Ireland proving particularly active.

Bakers strengthened its City data protection and cyber practice with the hire of Paul Glass from Taylor Wessing, where he was a partner in the firm’s commercial technology and data group. Glass spearheaded Taylor Wessing’s cybersecurity practice and has advised on issues such as data breaches for 12 years. Revolving doors: tech hires dominate a busy week in the lateral recruitment market

The past week has seen a number of interesting hires of senior technology specialists at leading firms, as well as the recruitment of former cabinet ministers as special advisers. 

Clifford Chance (CC) made a significant move, hiring a new partner to its tech group – part of the global corporate practice – in London. The firm has hired Simon Persoff from DLA Piper, where he acted as a senior consultant advising on data protection, privacy, cyber security and banking secrecy issues. Skadden doubles down on City recruitment drive with hire of Freshfields star Embley

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom has hired one of the most well-known M&A partners in the City, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer veteran Bruce Embley.

Goodwin’s already eye-catching City office has pulled off another coup, attracting the storied Sidley Austin private equity team led by Erik Dahl and Christian Iwasko.

Revolving doors: CC fertile hunting ground for Simpson Thacher as Mishcon loses two disputes partners in a week

Lateral hires are not commonplace for Simpson Thacher & Bartlett but when it does in London, Clifford Chance is often the firm to lose out. The firm that hired Adam Signy, Jason Glover and Amy Mahon from CC has once again hired from the Magic Circle player, this time adding financial regulation specialist Owen Lysak. 

Lysak advises private funds, asset managers and financial institutions on UK and EU financial market regulations and transactions, including in relation to AIFMD, MiFID II and MiFIR. He counsels market participants on regulatory capital requirements and securities regulation, on markets abuse regulations, and on issues related to Brexit and the financial crisis regulatory response. He also advises on the regulatory aspects of M&A and restructurings within the financial sector. The recent City corporate merry-go-round at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has continued in the past week, with leading partner Nigel Stacey moving to Baker Botts in London. Meanwhile, Shearman & Sterling has hired former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner Simon Marchant.

Stacey – one of the major names remaining at Gibson Dunn’s London office – has more than 20 years’ experience in mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance, acting for major corporate clients on a wide range of public and private transactions and advisory matters across numerous sectors, including TMT and life sciences. UK-listed firm Keystone Law has continued its summer run of partner recruitment, adding three more to its roster in the past week.

Sandra Bates and Yohanna Weber joined the firm in late August as lateral hires from Fladgate and Fieldfisher respectively, while at the same time Alex Heaton, who was a counsel at Reed Smith and has over 20 years’ experience as a commercial property lawyer, has also joined Keystone as partner. Revolving Doors: Paul Hastings completes swift one-two to dominate last week’s City recruitment

Paul Hastings was the only notable mover in the City lateral market over the past week, with the US firm securing a swift double hire to bolster its finance practice.

The firm announced today (24 August) that infrastructure partner Derwin Jenkinson would be joining the practice from Ashurst. Jenkinson leaves after a seven-year spell at Ashurst, where he advised on loan and capital markets across infrastructure M&A and project finance matters.
