Mishcon de Reya’s head of international arbitration Louis Flannery KC has left the firm, and is set to join Littleton Chambers in August as a silk in the set’s international arbitration team.
In another blow for Travers Smith, respected corporate M&A and ECM partner Richard Spedding has left to join Linklaters, on the back of the departure of a private equity duo to Goodwin late last month.
A Legal 500 Hall of Famer for small to mid-cap equity capital markets, Spedding was at Travers or 25 years. Experienced in public M&A and the UK Takeover Code, Spedding recently co-led the firm’s team advising key private equity client Inflexion on its £342m takeover of DWF.
Paul Weiss, Kirkland, and Skadden were all active in London lateral hires this week, with two partner exits from Linklaters amid the moves.
Mayer Brown has strengthened its London tax practice with the addition of tax partner Sam Riesenberg. US-qualified Riesenberg has joined the firm’s City base from KPMG in Washington, where he worked within the firm’s national tax practice. His hire bolsters Mayer Brown’s international tax offering across the asset management and funds sectors as he has significant experience in the space, working with clients including fund sponsors, sovereign wealth and pension funds, institutional investors, family offices and fund managers.
His hire is Mayer Brown’s second into its London tax practice this year, following closely on the heels of real estate investment specialist Ben Eaton’s appointment hire in January this year. Clifford Chance began last week by revealing that it had acquired two new partners, Craig Nethercott and Chirag Sanghrajka, to its global energy and infrastructure practice in both London and Dubai respectively.
Nethercott joins from Latham & Watkins, where he spent nearly 14 years as a partner, before which he spent seven years as a partner at White & Case. He brings to CC a wealth of experience handling work involving banking, capital markets, Islamic finance and energy transition projects. His clientele includes energy, metals, and infrastructure companies, as well as capital providers.
The latest in a series of departures from Kirkland & Ellis in London has seen partner Philipp Kurek join City boutique firm Signature Litigation after 14 years at the Chicago-bred disruptor. Kurek specialises in international arbitration and represents clients in various sectors, including technology, real estate, and private equity.
The move followed on from the news earlier this month that Kirkland debt finance partner Stefan Arnold-Soulby was leaving to be reunited with his colleague Neel Sachdev at Paul Weiss. Arnold-Soulby is known for his experience in handling complex financings and representing financial sponsors, with key clients that include Bain Capital Private Equity and Accel-KKR. Leading the moves this week, Goodwin has hired McDermott partner Arvin Abraham for its private equity practice in London. He brings with him experience advising on transactions for private equity sponsors, venture capital funds and strategic investors, mainly in the fintech, healthcare and life sciences sectors.

Leading several high-profile moves this week, White & Case has hired antitrust partner Michael Engel from Kirkland & Ellis in London. Engel, who is dual-qualified in the UK and Germany, had been a partner at Kirkland since January 2021 and, before that, was at Sullivan & Cromwell for a decade.

Sidley Austin’s London office made a major play last week with the hire of two prominent energy infrastructure and private equity partners from Weil, Gotshal & Manges. James MacArthur has joined the firm’s global energy, transportation and infrastructure practice and will be followed shortly by his Weil colleague Ed Freeman.
