CMS has added its name to the growing list of firms increasing their partner intake this year, with its cohort up two on last year’s 47.

Clifford Chance has promoted 30 lawyers to partner, confirming a trend which saw Magic Circle firms increase their partner intake this year.
Announced today (25 April) and effective next month, women make up a third of this year’s intake, bringing the total proportion of female partners at the firm to 20%. Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has unveiled an increased 22-strong global partner promotions round for 2019, however this includes a reduction in London appointments.
Overall, it is a significantly larger round than last year, when 17 lawyers were promoted globally, with six in London. But the promotions, effective 1 May 2019, see only four partners minted in London, with six each made up in EMEA, Asia and Australia. Eversheds Sutherland’s international business has made 27 partner promotions, up seven on a flat 2018 round, but with just three promotions in London.

Allen & Overy has promoted 14 London partners amid a scaled up 34-strong global round while Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom has promoted its first City partner in three years.
The Magic Circle firm made heavier investment in new partners than last year and also significantly improved the promotion of women, minting eight females – equal to 24% of the newest partners – of which two are part-time. Last year, A&O made up only two women in its 20-strong round, having the same month vowed to redouble its diversity efforts. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has promoted 22 lawyers to partner, including eight in London, amid a stronger promotion round for the Magic Circle firm.
This is a significant increase on last year when the firm made up just 12 lawyers globally and a mere five in the City. It is also an increase on 2017 when the firm promoted 18 lawyers globally and six in London. For the sixth year in a row Linklaters has increased the size of its promotion round, adding 33 lawyers to its partnership.
Eleven of the new partners announced today (11 March) and effective from May are women, surpassing the firm’s 30% annual target and meaning its overall partnership will be 20% female for the first time. Jones Day, Sidley Austin, Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld have unveiled their 2019 partner promotions, together welcoming four more London based-lawyers to their partnerships than last year.

Dechert is continuing a recent spate of investment in its London office with the promotion to partner of three in the City amid a scaled up 16-strong global round.
The Philadelphia-headquartered firm has continued its commercial litigation push by making up Matthew Banham and Timothy Bowden from its white-collar crime bench in London, while tax lawyer Daniel Hawthorne has also been promoted. Mayer Brown and Weil, Gotshal & Manges have minted four and three partners respectively in the City amid increased global promotion rounds for the US outfits.
