Latest partnership rounds confirm another tough year to make the grade at City leaders

Partnership promotion figures unveiled in April saw a slight improvement on the dwindling numbers seen in earlier announcements, although still fall largely short of the 5% estimated to be needed to maintain partnerships at their current levels.

Linklaters and Clifford Chance (CC) made up 21 partners apiece and Herbert Smith Freehills 23, as Norton Rose Fulbright unveiled a post-merger figure of 46, and Ashurst similarly revealed it will make up 15 partners in the first round since its merger last year with Australia’s Blake Dawson.

Partner promotions: CMS promotes 30; Clyde & Co nine; Lawrence Graham five

The latest round of partner promotions among the top 20 UK firms has this week seen CMS Cameron McKenna announce the appointment of 30 associates to partner across Europe, including five in the UK, while Clyde & Co has promoted nine and, outside the top 20, Lawrence Graham has made up five new partners.

Partner promotions: even split across Australia and London as HSF promotes 23

Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) today announced that it has promoted 23 of its lawyers to the firm’s partnership. The promotions will take effect on 1 May, the same day that Mark Rigotti and Sonya Leydecker take over as co- chief executive officers of the firm.

First post-merger promotion round sees Norton Rose Fulbright make up 46

Norton Rose Fulbright has announced its first global partner promotions since the merger of Norton Rose and leading Houston energy firm Fulbright & Jaworski took effect in June 2013. A total of 46 partners are being made up, including eight promotions to the South African equivalent role of director. Partner promotions: Wragges and DAC Beachcroft make up significantly more lawyers; Olswang promotes two
