White & Case reverts to London in 40-strong global partner promotions round 

White & Case has refocused on the City in its latest partnership promotion round, after largely overlooking London last year in an uncharacteristic move for the firm.

The firm announced today (9 October) that as of January 2021 nine lawyers in the City will be minted as part of a wider 40-strong promotion round.  In characteristic ‘retrenchment be damned’ fashion, Kirkland & Ellis has beaten its own record for the number of partners it promotes, making up 145 globally and 16 in the City. 

The move sees the world’s highest-grossing law firm continue its striking ascent even in the face of coronavirus uncertainty to add four to last year’s 141-strong total, of which 16 were in London. Pinsent Masons has promoted staff outside of traditional legal services to partner for the first time in a slightly increased partner promotions round.

The firm said today (30 March) it was promoting 17 to partner, effective 1 May, including Hayley Boxall from its forensic accounting services team and director of client solutions David Halliwell. Pinsents has an forensic accounting team of seven, focusing on disputes, consultancy services and investigations, while Halliwell is charged with working across the firm to help clients change the way they deliver and receive legal services. Slaughters makes up seven in the City with bulked-up promotion round

City blueblood Slaughter and May has promoted seven partners in the City and one in Hong Kong following an increased promotion round, with corporate receiving the lion’s share.

The promotion round sees London land four additional corporate partners, with one apiece going to the firm’s infrastructure and natural resources, investigations and financing practices respectively. NRF London partner promotions flat at eight in North America-focused round

Norton Rose Fulbright has promoted 48 lawyers to partner and five to the South African partner-equivalent role of director, increasing its intake on last year’s 46.

Promotions in its City base stayed the same as last year at eight, however, as the firm focused heavily on its American business, which accounted for more than half of the intake. Hogan Lovells has increased partnership promotions in the City for the fourth successive year, minting eight in London amid a slightly scaled back round.

The firm announced today (6 January) it has promoted 29 of its lawyer to the partnership in the last round overseen by chief executive Steve Immelt (pictured), who will hand over to Miguel Zaldivar in June following a confirmatory vote by partnership in late December last year. Kirkland alumni gets nod as Sidley promotes two in London following 30-strong promotion round

Sidley Austin has promoted two of its City associates to partner, including one of the 40 lawyers who has joined the firm from Chicago rival Kirkland & Ellis over the last three years.

The round announced today (12 December) saw the number of those minted in the City lift on last year, when the firm only promoted one, but saw Sidley focus heavily on its Washington DC branch, which accounted for 11 of the 30 global promotions. The City and St Louis share the spoils of 17-strong BCLP global promotion round

Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) has promoted five partners in London, the same number as in St Louis, in its second promotion round since becoming a merged entity last year.

Weil makes up four in the City as women dominate global promotions for the first time

In an industry struggling to make good on long-held promises to achieve diversity at the partnership level, Weil, Gotshal & Manges has gone against the grain by making up more women than men to partner for the first time in its latest round.

Mayer Brown has promoted three lawyers to partner in London in a scaled back round that saw 27 partners minted globally.

The firm has been more conservative in its promotions across the board than last year, when it promoted four in London as part of a round that saw 34 made partner globally.
