Weil tops City partner promotions at leading Global London firms

US firms continue to break ground in London and are increasingly investing in moving their City lawyers up the partnership ranks.

Three out of Global London’s top ten US firms made over a fifth of their partner promotions in the City. Weil, Gotshal & Manges led the way with the highest percentage of partner promotions in January, having a total of 33% of its promotions round in the City. The firm recently announced strong partner profits – up 16.5% in 2014 after two disappointing years of falling profits – and stated its restructuring, finance and transactional practices in London were performing well.

New Year promotions: Hogan Lovells makes five up in London amid 24-strong promotions round

Hogan Lovells has today (5 January) become one of the first LB100 firms to announce its New Year promotions with 24 associates made up to partner, including five in London within the finance, disputes and corporate practices.

US partner promotions: Sidley Austin and Dechert place different weight on City

Dechert made London a core focus in its promotions this year with three associates making the grade in the City, over 25% of the firm’s 11-strong round, while Sidley Austin elected just two London lawyers to partner as part of its 32-lawyer list.

Partner promotions: 20% of Ropes & Gray new partners in London while McDermott adds three

Ropes & Gray and McDermott Will & Emery are the most recent US firms to announce their partner promotions, with Ropes making up four in the City out of 20 worldwide, while McDermott is promoting three in London out of a total of 33.

82 join the club – eight new partners in City as Kirkland makes up more than Macfarlanes’ entire partnership

In one of the largest global partnership promotion rounds, Kirkland & Ellis has made up eight of its London associates to partner in a round that saw 82 lawyers join the global partnership, including one promotion from of counsel to partner.

Partner promotions: Slaughter and May invests further in Hong Kong with out-of-step promotion

Having already announced a double partner promotion in Hong Kong at the start of the year Slaughter and May today (23 July) announced that Hong Kong corporate associate Charlton Tse has been made up to partner, marking the tenth promotion of 2014 and the highest number since 2000.
