Looking stateside again: BLP in ‘surprising’ merger talks with Bryan Cave

‘Surprising’ was the adjective frequently deployed by City partners in October when merger talks between Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) and US firm Bryan Cave were unveiled, with BLP going back to the US market 19 months after its attempts to tie up with Greenberg Traurig ended brutally.

The new candidate for a transatlantic union is closer in size and profitability to BLP compared to Greenberg and the union would create a 1,700-lawyer entity with 32 offices in 12 countries.

Gordon Dadds makes first strategic acquisition following summer AIM float

West End firm Gordon Dadds has made its first strategic acquisition since its public float in August, acquiring tax advisory business CW Energy for £4m to ‘further the company’s intention to expand its tax advisory business’.

The sum of £4m will be paid equal annual installments over five years and further consideration may be payable depending on the performance of the business. According to a London Stock Exchange announcement made today (1 November), Gordon Dadds has paid £300,000 upon completion of the deal and expects the acquisition to immediately enhance earnings at the firm. A four-partner, top-ranked  sports law team from Charles Russell Speechlys has spun off to create specialist boutique firm Northridge, while media and brands specialist Wiggin has acquired intellectual property (IP) practice Redd.

Northridge founding partners Jonathan Ellis, Ian Lynam, Jon Walters and James Eighteen, who led Charles Russell’s sports law team to tier 1 in the Legal 500, launch the new firm this morning (23 October) with a starting team comprised of 16 fee earners. Back in the USA: BLP looks stateside again as merger talks with Bryan Cave confirmed

Nineteen months to the day since its last attempt to forge a transatlantic union with Greenberg Traurig was abandoned, Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has today (16 October) confirmed that it is in merger talks with Global 100 firm Bryan Cave.

Subject to a partnership vote later this year, the tie-up would create a firm comprising 1,500 lawyers spread across 32 offices in 12 countries, including St Louis-headquartered Bryan Cave’s 19 US outposts and with a combined revenue of around $975m. Dentons is to combine with Scottish firm Maclay Murray & Spens, embarking on the latest phase of its European expansion into Scotland’s oil and gas markets and bringing its total UK lawyers to over 800.

The merger is the latest in a series for the Dentons, the world’s largest law firm by number of fee earners, as it adds three more offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. ‘Major consolidator’: Work Group raises £20m as it gears up to list Gordon Dadds in August

Following Work Group’s conditional £18.8m reverse takeover bid for West-End firm Gordon Dadds, Work Group confirmed it has successfully raised £20m, as the firm gears up to publicly list in August.

Work Group said in a statement that it had raised £20m through the conditional placing of new ordinary shares in Work Group, at a post-consolidation price of 140 pence per share, which would give the enlarged group a market capitalisation of £40m, based on the placing price on admission to AIM.
