Despite talks over the giant south-east combination between Blake Lapthorn, Boyes Turner and Morgan Cole to create a £100m firm falling through late last year with Boyes Turner withdrawing, Blake Lapthorn and Morgan Cole last month announced the two will merge on 1 July to form Blake Morgan, a 120-partner firm with a joint revenue of £72m.

US merger talks: Patton Boggs and Squire Sanders confirm ‘early’ discussions

Washington-based Patton Boggs and transatlantic top 40 Global 100 firm Squire Sanders are in preliminary merger talks, the firms confirmed to Legal Business today (27 February), with a view to creating a 1,700-lawyer firm with 45 offices across 22 countries.

Mergerwatch: Speechly Bircham in talks with Charles Russell

Speechly Bircham is trying its hand once more at finding a merger partner as the firm last month announced it is currently in talks with fellow Legal Business 100 firm Charles Russell, a deal that would place the combined firm in the top 30 of the LB100.

A joint statement released by both firms on 21 February said: ‘City law firms Charles Russell and Speechly Bircham have confirmed that they are in preliminary talks about a potential merger between their two firms.

Davenport Lyons and Howard Kennedy FSI take another chance on the mid-market merger game

After a relatively quiet few weeks for mid-tier merger mania, Davenport Lyons and Howard Kennedy FSI have done the decent thing by confirming they are in discussions regarding a tie-up. The talks come after a potential union between Shakespeares and Davenport Lyons reportedly fell through last month.

Howard Kennedy confirmed the latest discussions. A spokesperson commented: ‘We have been approached and are currently at the initial stages of talking to Davenport Lyons with a view to exploring the possibilities of a merger. We are at a very early stage in those discussions but we remain open-minded as to what may come from looking at this in more detail. We remain committed to the vision of growing HKFsi, be it through bolt-ons, mergers or lateral hires and will look at all opportunities presented to us.’
