Wragge Lawrence Graham has nailed its international aspirations to an ambitious tie-up with Canada’s Gowlings… to the bewilderment of peers. Why?

In September 2002, a Legal Business article on Wragge & Co likened the Birmingham giant’s fledging London branch to a troublesome toddler, describing international expansion as ‘just a twinkle in [then senior partner] Quentin Poole’s eye’. Thirteen years on, Wragges has swapped a best friends policy for offices in ten locations, including Paris, Dubai, Munich and Guangzhou, and transformed its London arm through its 2014 union with City practice Lawrence Graham (LG).

‘Opportunity-filled economies’: Dentons to launch in Latin America with proposed local tie-up

Days after announcing its fifth merger of 2015 with Luxembourg outfit OPF Partners, Dentons has today (30 November) announced it will launch a presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, and is considering combining with Colombia’s Cárdenas & Cárdenas, and Mexico’s López Velarde, Heftye y Soria (LVHS).

Addleshaws in bid to merge with Glasgow’s Maclays as run of Anglo-Scots consolidation continues

Addleshaw Goddard is in talks to merge with Scots law firm Maclay Murray & Spens in a deal that would create a national practice with combined revenues of around £230m and offices in eleven locations, including London, Manchester, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Hong Kong.

Sum of its parts: can King & Wood Mallesons match the hype?

After a promising first year for King & Wood Mallesons/SJ Berwin, its UK practice saw a bruising 12 months. Tom Moore reports on its efforts to regain the initiative.

The first 12 months of SJ Berwin’s merger with King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) seemed plain sailing. The expected fallout that often occurs after such a transformative merger hadn’t materialised, with just a handful of partner exits amounting to no more than the average churn at a big law firm. The partnership was supportive of the merger, which went live in November 2013. There were few abstentions and disputes partner Tim Taylor QC even starred in a high-energy dance routine in a Dubai swimming pool to celebrate the merger, becoming a minor viral hit in the process.
