US pharmacy giant Walgreens Boots Alliance has appointed the former general counsel of Alliance Boots, Marco Pagni, as executive vice president and global chief legal and administrative officer just weeks after its £5.6bn merger in December.
Pagni will oversee all global legal affairs for Walgreens Boots Alliance and its divisions, including strategy and mergers and acquisitions, working with acting chief executive Stefano Pessina.
Walgreens Boots Alliance was created through the combination of Walgreens and Alliance Boots before Christmas, a deal which provided Pagni with the top legal job at the merged company. The Walgreen Company instructed New York law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and Allen & Overy (A&O) to handle its acquisition of the remaining 55% of Nottingham-based chemist Alliance Boots in a £5.6bn deal.
Pagni’s prior experience in-house before joining Alliance UniChem, a predecessor company to Alliance Boots, includes serving at McDonald’s Corporation for 10 years in several senior management positions such as GC international, and vice president of international development.
The company has also appointed Jan Stern Reed, most recently corporate vice president and GC for Walgreen, as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for Walgreens Boots Alliance. She will continue serving as general counsel for Walgreen.
